Services

The Department of Pulmonary Medicine offers comprehensive and state of the art diagnostic and therapeutic services to patients with cancer who also have pulmonary disease. Under the leadership of Dr. Rodolfo Morice, Director of Clinical Programs; the pulmonary department seeks to provide prompt, efficient, courteous and compassionate care to all our patients.

We have developed a broad range of programs and clinical pathways designed to meet the needs of patients with pulmonary diseases. Our multidisciplinary approach emphasizes close collaboration with nurses, pulmonary technicians, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and thoracic surgeons to individualize and optimize patient care. Programs currently offered include:

Consultative Services

  • Expert state of the art evaluation, diagnosis and management in every area of pulmonary disease and adult critical care medicine
  • Evaluation and management of radiation associated lung injury
  • Evaluation and management of patients with chemotherapy associated lung injury
  • Preoperative pulmonary evaluation for high risk patients prior to surgery
  • Pulmonary evaluation for bone marrow transplantation 
  • Evaluation and management of sleep disturbances including sleep apnea, insomnia and other sleep related issues

Advanced Diagnostic Bronchoscopy Services

  • Diagnostic flexible Bronchoscopy
  • Bronchoalveolar lavage
  • Autofluorescence bronchoscopy
  • Transbronchial needle aspiration biopsy
  • Endobronchial and transbronchial lung biopsy
  • Endobronchial ultrasound

Complex Airway Management Program

  • Evaluation by physicians highly experienced in management of complex airway obstructions
  • Multimodality therapeutic options
  • Therapeutic flexible bronchoscopy
  • Rigid bronchoscopy under anesthesia
  • Endobronchial laser applications
  • Argon plasma electrocoagulation
  • Endobronchial stents- self expandable and silicone
  • HDR Brachytherapy (in conjunction with Radiation Oncology)
  • Photodynamic therapy
  • Close monitoring and follow up care

Pleural Diseases Program

  • Evaluation by highly experienced physicians
  • Ultrasound guided diagnostic and therapeutic Thoracentesis
  • Pleural biopsy
  • Denver Catheter Insertion
  • Chest tube drainage
  • Pleuroscopy  (Medical Thoracoscopy)
  • Close monitoring and follow up care

Respiratory Physiology Services

  • Preoperative pulmonary evaluation of high risk patients
  • Pulmonary Function Tests (PFT)
  • Regional Lung Ventilation/Perfusion scans
  • Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing

Sleep Center

  • Consultation and evaluation by boarded Sleep Specialists
  • State of the art 4 bed Sleep Laboratory
  • Detailed evaluation and treatment of cancer-related insomnia
  • Management of CPAP/BiPAP adjustment difficulties
  • Polysomnography, PAP titration, Narcolepsy testing (MSLT)
