Electron Microscopy and Immunocytochemistry

Electron Microscopy

The Electron Microscopy lab processes tissue for ultramicroscopic examination under the electron microscope. About 98% of the specimens processed are submitted from Frozen Section. The remaining 2% come from the Bone Marrow lab or clinics. The EM lab processes 850 specimens per year of which 90% are for diagnosis. The remaining cases are for research.

Immunocytochemistry

The Section of Immunocytochemistry focuses on providing stains of antigens as in the histological or cytological diagnosis of neoplastic conditions and in predicting the outcome of patients with cancer. Research activities are done independently and in collaboration with staff from the division, other departments and other institutions. Currently the annual volume of the section is approximately 40,000 slides with 95% consisting of clinical studies. A separate research operation has been established with a charge-back system.
