The Visiting Physician Program is an opportunity for orthopaedic oncologists to visit the Department of Orthopaedic Oncology and observe in the clinics, observe surgical procedures in the operating room, attend multidisciplinary treatment planning conferences and weekly fellow didactic programs under the guidance of experts in the field. The volume of surgical procedures scheduled and performed per week varies widely based on the activities of the faculty.
Visiting Physician Program applicants must be a current member of an Orthopaedic Oncology Department. The applicant must complete an application clearly outlining the primary purpose for the visit and the goals and outcomes expected. The applicant must comprehend, read, and speak English fluently as it is imperative that the applicant must be able to communicate effectively. Visiting privileges may be revoked for candidates unable to demonstrate competency upon arrival.
How to Apply
The Visiting Physician Program follows the guidelines set forth by the institution’s Short-Term Observers Program. All applications must be turned in within minimum of (3) months prior to the requested date of visit. International visitors are required to submit their applications six (6) months in advance and are responsible for securing their own visa. Applicants are responsible for all travel expenses, room and board while participating in the Visiting Physician Program.
Length of visits for short-term visitors and visiting physicians are 30 days maximum and 6 months for observers. Requested dates of visit are not guaranteed and are dependent upon availability of mentors, staff, and resources. Some dates will not be available due to scheduled holidays, national, and international conferences.
A completed Visiting Physician Program application will include the following:
- Completed Short-Term Application
- Curriculum vitae
- Proof of highest degree (copy of diploma or transcript)
- Letter from a person of authority at the home institution stating how it will benefit their employee/trainee observe at MD Anderson
- Translation of any documents not written in English

Applicant notifications will be sent within eight (8) weeks of receipt. The Visiting Physician Program Committee will select applicants and placement will be dictated by the following criteria:
- Availability of hosting mentor
- Availability of dates that do not conflict with major national or international meetings
- Availability of resources
At the conclusion of the visit, the applicant will be provided with a letter acknowledging their participation in the Visiting Physician Program. No certificate will be provided.
