Bioluminescence and fluorescence imaging is rapidly being adopted in cancer research to detect early tumor development, metastasis, residual disease, and tumor recurrence.
The IVIS 100 is a high throughput fluorescence and bioluminescence imaging system that gives researchers a fast and cost effective method of monitoring animal models in a broad range of studies. Minimal invasiveness allows repeated visualization of intrinsic tumor development.
Typically, tumor cells expressing luciferase from Photinus pyralis (firefly) or fluorescence particles are implanted subcutaneously/orthotopically in mice and subsequent growth is assessed over a period of days to weeks. The IVIS 100 has a sensitive adjustable field of view of 10-25 cm. This allows up to 5 mice or 2 large rats to be imaged at one time.
The system features a 25 mm cryogenically cooled CCD camera and a low background imaging chamber that allows the system to be used in standard lighting conditions. It has a built in anesthesia system to induce and keep animals anesthetized during imaging procedures. In addition, the imaging stage inside the IVIS 100 is heated to keep animals from becoming hypothermic during long imaging sessions.
Applications
The IVIS 100 can be used in cancer research to follow disease progression, to detect micro metastasis and metastasis spontaneously generated from primary tumors, to accurately quantify tumor burden, and effectively monitor responses to therapeutic treatments longitudinally. Other uses include: infectious disease, inflammation studies, metabolic disease, neurology, gene therapy, stem cell biology, cardiovascular disease, immunology, transplantation biology, and drug metabolism studies.
