Winning Image in NCI Cancer Close Up Competition 2017
Congratulations BOND Lab! This image will be one of only 24 winning images to be printed as a large digital transparency and prominently displayed on the NCI exhibit booth during the 2017 annual meetings of AACR and ASCO.
The image was obtained by Sangheon Han, Bioengineering Ph.D. graduate student from Rice, who carries out his research under mentorship of Konstantin Sokolov, Ph.D. in the Biomedical Optics & Nanodiagnostics (BOND) Lab. Sangheon captured this spectacular cancer-detecting nanoparticles image at the Immunology Optical Microscopy Laboratory (specializing in advanced fluorescence microscopy modes) with help of the Laboratory Manager, Anna Zal, M.Sc., and Scientific Director, Tomasz Zal, Ph.D.
This annual competition seeks spectacular images of cutting-edge NCI-supported research. This BOND Lab image will also be featured in NCI’s public image galleries (NCI Visuals Online and Instagram); shared through NCI's social media channels; and displayed on NCI's website, Cancer.gov.
Romero Aburto Receives Minority Scholar in Cancer Research Award
Congratulations to Rebeca Romero Aburto, Ph.D., for receiving a Minority Scholar in Cancer Research Award for the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) 2017 Annual Meeting!
The AACR administers this grant program with support from the National Cancer Institute Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities. Funds are awarded to meritorious minority scientists to allow participation at AACR Special Conferences and Annual Meetings. This prestigious award is intended to enhance the education and training of minority researchers and increase the visibility and recognition of minorities involved in cancer research.
Romero Aburto is a T32 Cancer Nanotech Postdoctoral Fellow working in the Biomedical Optics & NanoDiagnostics (BOND) Lab with Konstantin Sokolov, Ph.D., and other BOND lab members. She is passionate about, and committed to, pursing a scientific career in the field of nanotechnology for cancer management.
