After attending the conference, participants should be able to:

• Improve efficacy for treatment of nicotine addictions as part of integral care for patients, thus reducing risk of premature deaths (Knowledge, Competence and Performance)
• Improve counselors’ skills and provide additional breadth of experience in treating patient’s tobacco dependence disorders (Knowledge, Competence and Performance)

Need/Goal

Among clinical providers, there has been a reduced number of practitioners who actually utilize tobacco cessation best practices and guidelines when treating tobacco use.  Likewise, providers believe that patients have many other resources at their disposable if they do want to quit.  This is  evidence showing  only 60% of smokers received advice from their health care provider to quit, 30% sought help, and less than 5% received the most effective and evidence-based quitting treatment intervention: : combination medication and counseling.  (Babb et al. 2017) Furthermore, many clinical providers for patients lack access to state of the art and evidence-based treatments for tobacco cessation.  This program will address those issues by educating the provider through three and half day learning curriculum provided by specialists in the tobacco treatment programs at MD Anderson.  The Certified Tobacco Treatment Training program will, in the long term, contribute to tobacco control efforts and in turn prevent cancer and other tobacco related conditions.

Evaluation

A course evaluation form will provide participants with the opportunity to comment on the value of the program content to their practice decisions, performance improvement activities or possible impact on patient health status.  Participants will also have the opportunity to comment on any perceived commercial bias in the presentations as well as to identify future educational topics.  An evaluation is also provided by the governing body of continuing education credits for submission and verification of attendance.

1.  CME Certificates

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for eligible providers.

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center designates this live activity for a maximum of 26.50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits^TM.  Eligible providers should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. 

2.  NCHEC Certificates

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is also accredited by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. to provide continuing Health Education contact hours for eligible providers.  This program is designated for the CHES and MCHES to receive 16 Category I continuing education contact hours. Maximum advanced-level CECH available is 11.  Total contact hours is 27.

3.  CEU Certificates

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Certified Tobacco Treatment Training Program is also pleased to report that it is approved through the University Of Houston Graduate College of Social Work to provide CEU’s for this training for eligible providers.

4.   Social Work CEUs are approved for up to a maximum of 29.0 CEUs for the 4-day training series based on sign in and sign out times each day.  Social Work CEUs are approved for LMSW and LCSW credentialed professionals, and with their licensing board approval, LPC and LMFT professionals.

5.  AARC (American Association for Respiratory for Care) CRCE Credits are approved for up to a maximum of 26.0 contact hours for the 4-day training series based on sign in and sign out times each day. RRT^®, CRT^®, CPFT^®, RPFT^®, RPSGT^®, AE-C^® credentialed professionals are all eligible to receive CEs through the AARC board.

CME, NCHEC and CEU Certificates and Attendance Verification Certificates

Certificates awarding AMA PRA Category 1 Credit^TM or certificates documenting attendance will be distributed to participants as they depart the conference.  To obtain a CME certificate, providers must submit a completed evaluation questionnaire and a CME verification form.  Upon request, a record of attendance (certificate) will be provided on-site to other health care professionals for requesting credits in accordance with state nursing boards, specialty societies or other professional associations. 

Certificates awarding NCHEC eligible providers will be distributed to participants within 30 days of the training.  To obtain a CEU certificate, providers must submit a completed evaluation questionnaire and sign-in form each day to verify attendance.

Disclosure 

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has implemented a process whereby everyone who is in a position to control the content of an educational activity must disclose all relevant financial relationships with any commercial interest that could potentially affect the information presented.  MD Anderson also requires that all faculty disclose any unlabeled use or investigational use (not yet approved for any purpose) of pharmaceutical and medical device products. The registration fee, minus a $100 administrative handling fee, is refundable if a written request is received on or before October 30, 2017. No refunds will be granted after that date.  The request for a registration refund must include the tax identification number of the company or institution if registration was paid by a company or institution check. The Department of CME/Conference Management reserves the right to cancel activities prior to the scheduled date if low enrollment or other circumstances make it necessary.  Each registrant will be notified by mail, email or at the phone or fax numbers given on the registration form.

In case of activity cancellation, the liability of the Department of CME/Conference Management is limited to the registration fee.  CME/Conference Management will refund the full registration fee.

Parking is available in the Mid Campus 1 Garage, adjacent to the Mid Campus 1 building.  The building and the garage are marked with green stars on the map. Take a parking ticket from the machine at the garage entrance to raise the gate arm.  Take the garage elevator to Floor 5 to access the crosswalk to Mid Campus 1.  When you enter the building, you will be on Floor 3.  Follow the signs to the Conference Center.  Please remember to bring your parking ticket with you as you must pay for parking before you leave the garage.
