Interventional Radiology Integrated Residency
The Houston Combined IR Residencies (HCIR) offers both Integrated and Independent Programs. HCIR is a partnership between:
- The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center
- The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston
- Texas Children's Hospital
- Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center
HCIR offers a five-year, IR/DR Integrated Residency program, and is jointly administered by MD Anderson and UTHealth. While clinical focus and IR teaching/activities are offered over the entirety of the residency, the first three years are concentrated on diagnostic radiology with full time clinical IR in the final two years.
Our program includes exposure to all facets of the practice of diagnostic and interventional radiology, with emphasis on clinical evaluation and patient management. Residents are trained in clinical evaluation, non-procedural longitudinal patient management, peri-procedural care, and service/resource management. Clinical workup and follow ups include problem-based consults, pre-procedure evaluation, and post-procedure follow up encounters. Our IR expectations are to provide training for fully integrated inpatient and outpatient capabilities including IR admissions and consult service.

Interviews
Interviews are by invitation only. We offer three ACGME accredited Integrated IR Residency positions each year. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all interview will be held virtually.
If you apply to the Integrated IR program and are selected to interview, you will be contacted by MD Anderson’s IR Education Office to select your interview dates. Each candidate will participate in two interviews:
- One interview for Interventional Radiology, hosted and arranged by MD Anderson
- One interview for Diagnostic Radiology, hosted and arranged by UTH
Please note: If you applied to AND were selected to interview for both programs, you do not need to interview with UTH Diagnostic Radiology twice.

MD Anderson Cancer Center is committed to encouraging good health and staying true to our mission to end cancer. If you are applying for a GME fellowship or residency program starting on or after July 1, 2016, please be advised that MD Anderson will have instituted a tobacco-free hiring process as part of its efforts to achieve these goals. If you are offered an appointment, you will be subject to a Pre-Employment Drug Screen for tobacco compounds in compliance with applicable state laws. If you do not pass the urine drug screening which includes testing for tobacco compounds, you CANNOT be appointed at MD Anderson. Should you fail to meet this contingency, MD Anderson will withdraw your offer of appointment for the academic year. You may reapply for the following academic year, but there are no guarantees that you will be offered a position as many of our programs are already filled for several years out.
