Faculty Educator of the Month: March 2010

Dr. Alexandria T. Phan

Dr. Alexandria T. Phan, Clinical Fellowship Training Coordinator and Associate Professor in the Department of Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology, has been named the March 2010 Faculty Educator of the Month.

Since being appointed Coordinator of the Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology Clinical Fellowship Training Program, Dr. Phan has played an instrumental role in the education of trainees at MD Anderson. In particular, as part of her coordinating duties, Dr. Phan develops and writes the program curriculum and puts into effect specific educational aspects for all trainees in the program. Also, she oversees planning and maintenance of the rotation schedule and is in charge of assessing the effectiveness of the program.

In addition to her work with the Clinical Fellowship Training Program, Dr. Phan has participated in the education of MD Anderson trainees as a lecturer. Specifically, she has delivered numerous lectures in the Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship Program, Physician Assistant Educational Programs, and Surgical Oncology Fellowship Conference. Dr. Phan also has been the Novartis Educational Lecturer on Carcinoid and Carcinoid Syndromes since 2005. Furthermore, she has given three presentations in the Surgical Grand Rounds series at MD Anderson.

Dr. PhanDr. Phan’s one-on-one educational experience has been extensive, as well. She has directly supervised several clinical residents and fellows, observers, and medical students. Her teaching efforts have extended beyond MD Anderson, as she has been a lecturer at Baylor College of Medicine and The University of Texas Medical School at Houston, given a Grand Rounds presentation at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, and been an invited speaker at several meetings in North and South America and Europe.

Dr. Phan has been well recognized for her educational efforts over the years. She received the Division of Cancer Medicine Teacher of the Year Award in 2006-2007 and 2008-2009. Also, she accepted the Division of Cancer Medicine Teaching Department of the Year Award in 2007-2008 and 2008-2009. Dr. Phan was nominated for the Gerald P. Bodey Award for Excellence in Education in 2007 and 2009. Furthermore, she received the C. D. Howe Award for Clinical Excellence in Medical Oncology in 2001. Outside MD Anderson, she received the Teaching Excellence as a House Officer award from Baylor College of Medicine in 2000.

Dr. Phan received her M.D. degree from the School of Medicine at the University of California, Irvine, in 1997. That same year, she came to Houston, where she completed an internship (1998) and residency (2000) in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Hematology (2002) at Baylor College of Medicine. She came to MD Anderson in 2000, where she completed a fellowship in Medical Oncology in 2003.

Upon completing her fellowship at MD Anderson, Dr. Phan joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Gastrointestinal Medical Oncology. She was named Clinical Fellowship Training Coordinator in 2005 and promoted to her current position of Associate Professor in 2009.

Over the past 5 years, Dr. Phan has been a faculty consultant or speaker for several external companies. In addition, she serves on several institutional committees, including the Clinical Research Committee, Credentials Committee of the Medical Staff, and Annual Exemplary Employee Selection Committee. She is also a member of the planning committee for the MD Anderson-Baylor College of Medicine Hematology-Medical Oncology Review Course. In 2010, she is serving on the Non-Colorectal Tract Scientific Committee for the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Since joining the MD Anderson faculty, Dr. Phan has been the principal investigator or a co-principal investigator or collaborator for several funded research projects. Also, she has been a reviewer for two journals. Finally, she has authored or co-authored numerous articles published in peer-reviewed journals.
