Sawakuchi Laboratory

The focus of our laboratory is to study DNA repair response induced by radiation and to develop innovative radiation detection technologies for applications in radiation therapy and radiobiology research. Particularly, we have been developing:

  1. Techniques to perform spatiotemporal measurements of radiation-induced injury in live cells.
  2. Novel detectors to measure:
    1. Linear energy transfer (LET) in proton beams.
    2. Radiation quantities at the nanometer scale.
  3. New ways to use radiation detectors in non-conventional radiation fields.

We develop and utilize time-lapse fluorescence microscopy to image biochemical processes in live cells. Additionally, we develop novel experimental techniques to measure radiation qualities. We utilize Monte Carlo simulations of radiation transport to understand the response of detectors and biological systems.
