Interview question for Dr. Chang:
Why M. D. Anderson?

Dr. Chang answers:
For postdocs coming to M. D. Anderson, I think the major things to think about are the outstanding scientific mentorship that people can get here. Certainly there are outstanding scientists at many institutions across the United States, but here, I think the advantage is that a lot of the scientists here are not just simply … in the field, but they participate in the field in ways that maybe other people don’t. In that they are helping the NCI in study section review and working with program officers at the NCI and the NIH to develop and sort of further the direction of research that the NCI is going to support. So we really have a lot of input at multiple levels in terms of determining that cancer agenda for the United States -- and in some ways, the world.

Interview question for Dr. Chang:
Other advantages?

Dr. Chang answers:
So really, postdocs coming here will be working with leaders, not just in a science but in determining that path of the scientific discovery. In addition to that we have lots of resources for trainees and postdocs. For example, the Postdoctoral Association is a group that was formed of postdocs and led by postdocs to do professional development organizations and activities, to provide peer mentorship to work with the leadership in advocating … on behalf of the postdocs here at M. D. Anderson. They are very active, they meet, I think, througout the year to keep on top of the issues that have the greatest relevance to postdocs throughout the institution.

Interview question for Dr. Chang:
Any advice?

Dr. Chang answers:
The one thing that I will add -- is that -- I grew up in New England -- where there are four beautiful seasons, and the more I wanted to stay in New England, the more South and West I moved for my career -- but I have to say that living in Texas has been really, really fun. There’s no state income tax which means you bring home more money. Which is great -- everybody likes that. But the people here are really friendly and sure, sure we have all these weather issues.  Are you born here? But also, that means that in the winter we have terrific winters and I always, always call my friends in the winter and tell them that I’m wandering around in my shorts and t-shirts, and oh, is it snowing up there? Oh, I’m so sorry -- kind of thing. There are just so many advantages to Houston. There are so many fun things to do.
