Scene 3: Role Reversal and Interviewing for Role

Facilitator: Good. I want you two to reverse roles, which means you're going to stand up and take the other person's chair. And, Susan, what I'm going to do is I'm going to warm Dr. Jacobs up to this role. I'm going to be interviewing Dr. Jacobs about this character, this patient of his. So, what's your name, ma'am?

Dr. Jacobs: My name's Betty.

Facilitator: And how old are you?

Dr. Jacobs: I am 32.

Facilitator: Tell us a little bit about yourself, Betty.

Dr. Jacobs: Well, I've had breast cancer -

Facilitator: Sorry to hear that -

Dr. Jacobs: Yeah. I'm actually recovering. I'm going through chemotherapy now.

Facilitator: Good. And tell us about your life.

Dr. Jacobs: Well, I've got two small children, and, you know, they're three and five, and real busy with them. You know, I was an administrative assistant before, but lately, I've had to give that up for my treatment -

Facilitator: Your treatment. So -

Dr. Jacobs: And I'm happily married.

Facilitator: Good. OK. And tell us what you're wearing today. Are you physically comfortable right now?

Dr. Jacobs: Yeah. Not too bad. I mean, I'm kind of uncomfortable just from all the chemo I've been getting, but, you know, I'm not really hurting, if that's what you mean -

Facilitator: So what's going on with you right now? You look a little peeved.

Dr. Jacobs: Yeah. I am. I've been waiting a long time here, and -

Facilitator: How long have you been waiting -

Dr. Jacobs: Well, this waiting room is a zoo. I mean, it's, like, people are crawling all over one another. I've got my kids here with me, and I had to take them out of day care today, and I don't know what to do with them. I'm waiting here. I wanted to get in and out for my blood check because I just got chemo. Not feeling great, and just really, you know, annoyed about, I've been here, like, two hours.
