WANTED - more volunteers!

Volunteer Voice - Winter 2010

Volunteer Services is preparing to celebrate National Volunteer Week April 18-24. Daytime volunteers will be recognized at a luncheon in the CPB April 20. In addition, evening and weekend volunteers will be recognized at a reception at the Junior League of Houston on April 13. Details on these events will be sent to volunteers later this spring.

Our volunteers are truly the heart of MD Anderson. However, there is always a need for volunteers in various placements across the institution. Currently, the Anderson Network is recruiting volunteers for the two Anderson Network Hospitality Centers, one in the Main Building and the other located in the Mays Clinic.

This daytime position has four-hour shifts Monday-Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Volunteers staff the Hospitality Room, providing an informal and relaxed environment where patients and caregivers may rest and visit between appointments. The volunteers in this position provide hospitality, empathy and information about resources to current patients and their family members.

To work in the Hospitality Center, the volunteer must have been a patient or caregiver and have good communication skills.

Volunteers are also needed to serve as floor hosts due to the expansion of the Alkek Hospital. Volunteers are assigned a hospital floor and visit with patients and their families. They share institutional resources and pick up and distribute patient mail, newspapers, TV guides and magazines. Depending on the patient’s needs, each visit is different and may require only an introduction to the hospital’s services and amenities or may require a longer visitation.

This position requires extensive walking and a self-motivated volunteer with excellent communication skills. For this direct patient contact position, day, evening and weekend opportunities are available.

Volunteers are also offered opportunities to cross-train in other volunteer positions than their current one. This opportunity allows volunteers the variety of different volunteer positions with new opportunities and experiences. For the volunteer department, cross-training ensures coverage of key volunteer areas such as the Cyber Center, Surgery Waiting Area, Gift Shop and the Concierge Desk.

If you are a current volunteer and would like to cross train to be a Hospitality Center or floor host volunteer, or if you have a friend or neighbor who would like to volunteer at MD Anderson in these or other positions, contact Mary Donnelly Jackson at 713-792-3792, or Jacquie’ Frelow at 713-563-1595,
