Alkek Expansion

PACU Transition Unit

Volunteer Voice - Spring 2008

Architectural rendersing of the Alkek expansion

The PACU Transition Unit, formerly located on the 6th floor in the Main Building , has moved to the 3rd floor, near Elevator E.

The PACU Transition unit on Floor 3 is still accessible from Staff Elevator PB and Elevator E.

All monitoring equipment previously used in the former PACU facility has been added to the new location for patients that require this additional care. Two patient rooms have been added in the new area and include special equipment to accommodate patients needing dialysis treatments. However, they can now provide this service from the comfort of the patient room.

Visitors Gallery, Bird Collection

The scenery within the Alkek rotunda has changed. The John P. McGovern Visitors Gallery on Floor 2 of the Main Building has relocated to the Mays Clinic West Lobby.

The Billye Spicer Grogan Porcelain Bird Collection located on Floor 1 also moved to a new location in The Park on Floor 2.

These moves are part of a series in the Alkek Expansion project. Additional moves include the move of patients from G10 and G12 in the Main Building to P6. Modifications to the new P6 location include isolation doors in the corridors and HEPA filtering units for each patient room, which allows for the continuation of the current level of care given on all the inpatient floors.

The Alkek Expansion project’s focus is the addition of eight inpatient floors and a mechanical floor atop the hospital. Stay tuned for more information on the Alkek Expansion project.

Tower Crane

A new construction tower crane was installed in February. The crane has the ability to reach a maximum height of 425 feet — about the height of 72 six-foot-tall adults stacked head to toe. It will reach over the top of the 22-story hospital expansion throughout the construction process.
