Inside This Show

More from Patient Power host Andrew Schorr on the Advances in the Treatment of Soft Tissue Sarcomas show.

Jennifer Burns of Houston had never heard of sarcoma when she was diagnosed with this serious malignancy in 2004. She was terrified, but Dr. Robert Benjamin, Chief of Sarcoma Medical Oncology at M. D. Anderson’s Sarcoma Center, quickly gave her confidence she had one of the world’s best sarcoma teams working with her. As she explains in our recent Patient Power webcast, the fight against her cancer was hard. She lost her hair soon after one chemotherapy regimen began, but she chose to go bald – no scarf – and draw positive power from the reactions she got to enjoy life and hope for healthy years ahead. As we heard on the webcast, things are working out for Jennifer. She had surgery in 2005 and since then has received no treatment. She’s confident about the future, so her contractor son, Christopher, is building Jennifer and her husband, Greg, a new house.

Obviously, Jennifer feels Dr. Benjamin and the sarcoma team saved her life, and while sarcoma is rare, the success M. D. Anderson has in fighting it is not uncommon. I think we all take hope in Jennifer’s story, and M. D. Anderson should be proud of dedicated providers like Dr. Benjamin who make a huge impact on the lives of so many.
