Network - Fall 2012
Recently, we asked readers of Network to tell us what they think of their online experience with the publication. Reader responses were in line with the goals and direction we have for the newsletter. Here are the highlights.
What best describes your relationship with The leading response was patient or survivor (54.3%), followed by family member or caregiver (19.8%). Health care providers and MD Anderson employees together made up another 13.4%. (Respondents were asked to check all that applied.)
How do you read Network?The great majority (77.7%) read the publication online. Responses for print (12.1%) and mobile device (8.9%) rounded out the results. (Respondents were asked to check all that applied.)
How much of Network do you usually read?Just over half —53.4% — said they read “some” and 46.2% said they read “all” of the magazine.
Which content do you find most interesting or pertinent?A whopping 89.5% said they’re drawn to the latest research news, 65.2% said they like information about dealing with side effects, and 64% said they like to read tips for patients, survivors and caregivers. (Respondents were asked to check all that applied.)
How has Network content affected you?Many (87.4%) said they’d learned more about MD Anderson’s contributions to cancer research and treatment. Some 44.5% said they’d shared the magazine or articles with others; 38.5% said they’d recommended MD Anderson to a patient, friend or relative. Another 32% said they had gained inspiration from patient/survivor stories, and 12.1% said they had made a donation to
MD Anderson. (Respondents were asked to check all that applied.)
If you read Network online, can you easily find the content that interests you?The great majority (79.2%) said yes. Just 2.1% said no; 18.8% said sometimes.
If you read Network online, what type of multimedia do you prefer?Readers prefer video (69.7%) and photo slideshows (55.3%) over audio (32.5%). (Respondents were asked to check all that applied.)
If you subscribe to Network online, what aspects of the email alert make you more likely to read the articles?The majority of respondents said interesting topics (62.7%), while the
MD Anderson name (53.8%) and an interesting email subject line (49.6%) were also deemed important. (Respondents were asked to check all that applied.)
Which social media sites do you regularly use?Facebook (46.6%) was the top choice, followed by YouTube (22.7%) and LinkedIn (19.8%). Just 7.3% said Twitter, and 39.7% said they don’t use any of these sites. (Respondents were asked to check all that applied.)
Do you have any comments or suggestions for Network?We received a number of positive comments, including:
- Find it very useful and comforting — gives us the sense of some ongoing contact with MD Anderson when patient is not there. It is reassuring and makes us feel you care.
- Excellent work, very beneficial to me as a health care provider working in palliative care in Ireland. Thank you.
- Keep up the good work. I don't have lots of time to search out information, especially about my husband's cancer. Shared information by survivors and/or caregivers gives me that human touch of what to expect or how to handle certain matters.
We also received some suggestions for content:
- I would love to have you do at least one article on desmoid tumors. Those of us who deal with desmoids could use some support/information/help.
- I need more information on which new treatments and studies are showing hope for brain tumor patients.
- What type of research is going on at MD Anderson? Would like to know.
- Would consider receiving a second opinion (should I need it) for multiple myeloma treatment, but am unfamiliar about the doctors at MD Anderson.
