Ask the Expert: ‘Depression, Anxiety and Cancer’
Network - Spring 2007
Mary Hughes, a clinical nurse specialist in the Department of Psychiatry at
M. D. Anderson since 1990, joins Ask the Expert, May 7-11 to answer patients’ and their caregivers’ questions about depression and anxiety in the cancer patient.
Being diagnosed with cancer can be overwhelming and frightening. About 20 percent of cancer survivors have depression, but it is under-diagnosed and, therefore, under-treated. Since depression and anxiety can interfere with cancer treatment, it is important to have these conditions properly treated. Hughes will be available to answer questions online about symptoms of depression and anxiety as well as treatment options.
Ask the Expert, Anderson Network’s online message board, allows cancer patients and caregivers to submit questions to M. D. Anderson experts on specific topics.
Log on to the board at to submit questions or to view past topics archived on the site. These include nutrition, lymphedema, clinical trials, fatigue, cancer prevention, patient safety, exercise and bone health, as well as site-specific questions and answers.
