Dr. Stanley R. Hamilton
Annual Report - 1998-1999
Dr. Stanley R. Hamilton, an internationally known pathologist and diagnostician, was recruited last year to head M. D. Anderson’s new Division of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. During 19 years on the faculty of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Hospital, he made many contributions to the field of colorectal diseases.
Dr. Hamilton is a leader in showing how the molecular profile of a tumor can help predict treatment outcome. In one study, he found two chromosomal alterations that may be used as markers to forecast how patients respond to a particular anti-cancer drug.
"Because of marvelous facilities, an outstanding faculty and staff, and a large patient population, M. D. Anderson offers phenomenal opportunities for translational research that can be conducted at a rapid pace," says Dr. Hamilton, who holds the Ellen K. Knisely Distinguished Chair in Colon Cancer Research.
During the past year, his division recorded 3,641,416 laboratory procedures and interpretation of 281,519 pathology slides. His "highest priority" is reducing the time it takes to process and analyze patient samples so the clinical faculty will have definitive diagnostic information as fast as possible.
