Letter From the President
Annual Report - 1996-1997
The "Making a Difference" theme for this 1995-96 annual report is illustrated through the personal stories shared by patients and donors, whose lives were forever changed because of the superb services provided by M. D. Anderson.
Most patients featured benefited from clinical trials that were conducted here and that frequently have led to better treatments for cancer patients elsewhere. Each person's story has been made possible by numerous physicians, scientists, nurses, labora tory staff, other allied health professionals, administrators and thousands of supporters. They are all an important part of M. D. Anderson's successful team approach to cancer care, research, prevention and teaching.
During the past year, the M. D. Anderson faculty, staff, volunteers and donors have taken substantial steps to assure this great institution extends its leadership in the final years of the decade and well into the 21st century.
This report reflects many of our integrated mission area highlights, some significant advances in programs and partnerships that reach beyond Houston and remarkable private fund-raising accomplishments that mean a big difference in maintaining M. D. Ande rson's reputation for exemplary cancer patient care and productive translational research.
Since assuming the presidency of M. D. Anderson last summer, I have been increasingly impressed with the dedication and expertise of the faculty and staff as well as the devotion of so many volunteers and donors. There is no other center with the single -minded commitment to improve multidisciplinary cancer therapies through translational research and clinical trials.
Together, I am confident that all members of the M. D. Anderson family will continue making a difference for as long as cancer challenges us.
John Mendelsohn, M.D.
