Services & Facilities

Cancer Pain Service

The Cancer Pain Service sees outpatients at MD Anderson’s main campus in the Pain Management Center, and has recently expanded outpatient services to our locations in the Bay Area, Katy, Sugar Land and The Woodlands. We also provide consultation services to adjust treatment plans for inpatients that experience pain related to their underlying disease.

Optimum pain control is achieved by:

  • Formulating an individualized treatment plan specific to each patient's needs
  • Using a combination of pain management strategies such as non-pharmacologic methods, pharmacotherapy, nerve blocks, implants and other procedural pain management techniques, including vertebroplasty
  • Practicing the continuum of care, beginning with a comprehensive assessment
  • Frequent reassessment to adjust treatment plans when necessary
  • A multidisciplinary approach involving professionals from various disciplines, including psychiatry, neurosurgery and interventional radiology

Postoperative Pain Service

The Postoperative Pain Service provides diligent and attentive care for inpatients after surgery 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

By providing 24-hour coverage at the bedside to address pain as it arises, we make educating patients and their families about pain management our first priority. Our goals are to:

  • Formulate an individualized treatment plan for each patient that utilizes the latest in epidural and intravenous patient-controlled analgesia techniques
  • Monitor patients on a continual basis to maintain comfort levels and to reduce any side effects or complication risks
  • Educate patients and their families to optimally manage post-surgical pain
  • Listen to our patients, to recognize their needs and desires and to assist them in controlling their pain
