Thyroid Nodule Clinic

Thyroid nodules are common and often detected incidentally either during a physical exam or by the person noticing a seemingly abnormal lump in his or her neck.  While studies have shown that the prevalence of palpable thyroid nodules is 5-15%, other studies that include findings from imaging procedures show non-palpable nodules in up to 60% of the U.S. population.  Even though the vast majority of thyroid nodules are found to be benign, careful evaluation of all suspicious nodules is extremely important to determine which may be malignant.

“We wanted the Thyroid Nodule Clinic here to be the place where patients will be able to complete their consultation, testing, and assessment on the same day, in one place, and leave with their treatment options in hand” says Dr. Naifa Busaidy, Director of the Thyroid Nodule Clinic at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.

The Thyroid Nodule Clinic at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center features streamlined and comprehensive care by a world-class multidisciplinary team including endocrinologists,
surgeons, cytopathologists, and diagnostic radiologists.  The thyroid nodule team at M. D. Anderson works together to provide accurate and efficient evaluations of thyroid nodules and ensure the best treatment plan for each patient.  The mission of the Thyroid Nodule Clinic is to offer our patients the highest quality in care and expertise in the distinction of cancerous from non-cancerous thyroid nodules.

Although the Thyroid Nodule Clinic is specifically designed for the evaluation and treatment of adults, children with a known or suspected thyroid nodule are able to be similarly evaluated through our Pediatric Endocrine Tumor Program at the Children's Cancer Hospital at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.
