Research
Faculty members in the Clinical Center for Targeted Therapy are actively involved in research to improve molecular profiling of patients with advanced cancers and match them with novel, targeted drugs in the Phase 1 clinical trial setting.
The following are areas of research being explored by the Investigational Cancer Therapeutics faculty:
Dr. Razelle Kurzrock discusses "Early Stage Molecular Profiling" at the Worldwide Innovative Networking.

Regional Therapy Program
The Clinical Center for Targeted Therapy offers clinical trials of regional therapy (chemotherapy and targeted agents) for patients whose cancer has metastasized but is still mostly limited to a specific body organ or region.
Regional therapy is used to treat specific organs and areas of the body where the cancer is located. Chemotherapy drugs or targeted agents are administered through an infusion directly into the affected area, through an artery that supplies blood to the tumor.
Regional chemotherapy allows for a higher concentration of drugs to the tumor site, while the drugs are filtered out of the rest of the body. This results in fewer side effects and a better overall response to the treatment. Regional therapy can be used to reduce the tumor size so it can be surgically removed later. However, many patients have had their tumor disappear with regional therapy alone.
The Clinical Center for Targeted Therapy offers the following regional therapy clinical trials:
Hepatic arterial infusion delivers drugs to the liver, for patients whose cancer is predominantly in the liver.
Intraperitoneal therapy is used for patients whose cancer manifests mostly as peritoneal carcinomatosis.
