Patient Corner

Michael Flynn

I am writing on behalf of my husband, Michael Flynn, because he is dying of acute lymphocytic leukemia. When anyone logs on to the M. D. Anderson website they can see pictures of people who are cancer free and considered to be the success stories. There are a lot of other success stories even from those who will not survive.

Cancer brings out the very best and the the very worst in all who find themselves in its grip. Once, after a particularly arduous protocol I told my husband that I was going to Wal-Mart and asked him if there was anything he needed. He asked for me to buy a pair of sneakers for the homeless men at the halfway house. He was very weak, could not walk, and could barely hold up his head, but he was thinking of others. This is the man I married. This is a success story.

Here is something I found among my husband's memoirs, reflections, poems and musings during his battle with ALL.

Work in Progress

When you are certain there is no more...
The sandstorm of life has parched your core beyond comprehension
and you lie waiting, maybe even hoping
for death to take you to its peace...
Reach deep, deep inside where it is unfathomable
for a mere speck of yourself
and know that if He can guide you there
and you can find it even for an instant...
maybe there is a little more.
And then you will know you have something else
to give away completely.

All My Best,
Debbie Flynn
