Project SUCCESS

Students Using Computer Coaching to Effectively Stop Smoking

Research Study Closed for Enrollment

University of Houston Students — Thinking about quitting smoking?

If you’re a smoker, chances are you’ve tried quitting before. Kicking the habit without help works for some people, but for many others, a stop-smoking program can provide the support needed to help them become smoke-free.

Project SUCCESS, a research study, is an on-campus, computer-based program designed specifically for college students. This study is a collaboration between M. D. Anderson’s Department of Behavioral Science and the University of Houston University Health Center.

With Project SUCCESS, you can learn to make informed decisions about your health and how to quit smoking.

No matter where you are right now — ready to quit, thinking about quitting or not ready to quit — we can help.

You Don’t Have to Quit Smoking to Participate

With Project SUCCESS, we’re exploring the quitting process — how, why and when you choose to quit. We hope to raise your awareness about smoking and how it affects your body. You’ll be encouraged and given every opportunity to quit, but quitting is not a requirement to participate.

What’s Required to Participate?

Participants must be 18-35 years old, smoke at least one cigarette a day and be enrolled at the University of Houston, either full- or part-time. Participants also must have Internet access and be able to read and speak English.

If you decide to participate, you’ll complete three in-person counseling sessions and five Web-based questionnaires. In-person sessions take place over a one-year period — when you enroll, three months later and nine months after that. Web-based sessions take place over a 12-week period, with one session every two weeks.

Participants also complete a 20-minute computer survey about their health, take a breathing test and provide a saliva sample.

Benefits of Participating

  • $130 in Cougar 1 Cards for completing the program
  • Free nicotine patches
  • Free individual counseling and Web-based support to help you quit
  • Convenient on-campus location
