Group Therapy for Nicotine Dependence
Interested in quitting smoking?
If you’re a smoker, chances are you’ve tried quitting before. Project MIND is a research study to evaluate a smoking cessation treatment offered in a group setting. In addition to group sessions, participants also receive the nicotine patch and self-help materials.
You’re eligible to participate if you’re:
- A current smoker
- Age 18 years or older
- Able to speak, read and write in English. If you don't speak English and are interested in quitting smoking, call the National Network of Tobacco Cessation Quitlines toll-free at 1-800-784-8669. Information is available in Spanish and English.
What’s involved in participating?
- Come to MD Anderson (located in the Texas Medical Center) once a week for
10 weeks. Sessions may last up to three hours. - Come to MD Anderson for a final follow-up session.

What do we know about smoking cessation?
- Nicotine is a powerful and addictive stimulant drug that affects mood and behavior.
- Nicotine is compared to cocaine and heroin in its capacity to addict.
- Information to help people cope with withdrawal, irritable moods, stress and smoking urges is effective in helping people quit smoking.
Specialists
David W. Wetter, Ph.D., principal investigator, is professor and chair of the Department of Health Disparities Research. His research targets elimination of disparities in health-related behavior and outcomes related to addiction and cancer risk behavior; the epidemiology and public health impact of that behavior; and the development and evaluation of theoretically-based interventions. Dr. Wetter’s intervention work focuses on high-risk and underserved populations, including the development and evaluation of palmtop computer-delivered treatments, telephone-based counseling, motivational approaches and mindfulness-based treatments.

FAQs
Do all participants receive nicotine patches?
Yes. As usual, some people, such as women who are pregnant or nursing, can’t use nicotine patches.
Do you guarantee that I’ll quit smoking?
No. Quitting smoking is completely up to you. Project MIND can offer you the support and assistance to make the process of quitting easier for you.
When are the counseling sessions?
Most are held on weekdays in the evenings, although some sessions may be offered during the day.
Where are the counseling sessions?
All counseling sessions take place at MD Anderson. Your parking will be validated.
Is this confidential?
Yes. All the information you provide will be completely confidential. No one outside this study may have access to your information without your permission.
