Genetic Testing & Counseling

Approximately 5-10% of cancer is inherited. Individuals with a genetic predisposition will have a far higher chance ofGenetic Testing developing cancer within their lifetime and at an earlier age. Over the last 15-20 years, great progress has been made in identifying the genes which predispose individuals to breast, colorectal, gynecologic and endocrine tumors. Individuals identified as having a hereditary predisposition to cancer are recommended to undergo high-risk cancer surveillance in order to manage their increased cancer risks.

Genetic Counseling

If you are concerned about hereditary cancer, you may consider having a genetic consultation. During a consultation, you will meet with a genetic counselor to review your family medical history and discuss the role of genetics in cancer. A cancer risk assessment will be performed, which includes discussion of:

  • The chance that a risk for cancer might be passed through the genes in your family
  • Any genetic testing that could be helpful for your family
  • A general estimate of your personal cancer risks
  • Appropriate screening and prevention for you and your family

Genetic Testing

Genetic testing is available for many of the hereditary cancer predisposition syndromes. Genetic testing may help families determine who is at higher risks for certain types of cancer. However genetic testing is not appropriate for everyone. During the genetic consultation visit, we will evaluate your family history and discuss whether genetic testing may be appropriate for you or your family.
