It’s beginning to look a lot like holiday time at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. ‘Tis the season for the annual friendly competition between staff in different patient care areas of the cancer center who create their own themes and decorate with flair and imagination.

Decorations are centered around themes as unique as “The Houston Texans’ First Christmas,” as current as “A Whoville Christmas” and as patient-friendly as “Our Patients Are Deer to Us.” More than 35 clinics, inpatient units, offices, lobbies and other hospital areas will be judged by volunteers and administrators on the basis of creativity and originality.

The holidays can be difficult for patients who must remain in the hospital. This annual Holiday Decorating Contest, which is sponsored by M. D. Anderson’s Volunteer Endowment for Patient Support (VEPS) and the Department of Volunteer Services, brings the festivities to these patients and creates a warm and cheerful atmosphere to the center’s hallways.

  • 10-11 a.m. – Three judging teams led by the M. D. Anderson management team will select a winner from three finalist entries.
  • 11:15 a.m. – M.D. Anderson Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer David Callender announces contest results at a post-contest reception. Dr. Callender and the creators of all three finalist entries will be available for interviews.

Media representatives are welcome at any time during the contest or for post-contest interviews. Live shots can be arranged.
