No snow, no reindeer — but keep an eye out for Santa and his wife as young patients at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center launch the 2000 holiday season with spirit at the 17th annual Children’s Art Project Holiday Kickoff Parade.

The parade showcases giant reproductions of young patients' famed holiday art and is the start of retail sales of the holiday cards and gift items, which feature the artwork of the M. D. Anderson pediatric designers. The designers and their "celebrity media buddies" will ride on antique cars and vintage fire trucks through the streets of the Texas Medical Center along with physicians, volunteers and other pediatric patients. Floats, marching bands, drill teams, clowns and more will add to the festivities — plus a special appearance by Santa and Mrs. Claus.

This year the Children's Art Project funds a record $1.5 million worth of patient programs at

M. D. Anderson. Cards and gift items will be available in retail outlets across the country in October. For a free catalogue, call 1-800-231-1580 or visit www.childrensart.org.

NOTE: The parade begins at the Houston Main Building parking lot, 1100 Holcombe Blvd. From Holcombe and Bertner Avenue, it travels north on Bertner, turns right onto Moursund Street, right onto John Freeman Avenue, and right onto Bates Street, traveling in front of M. D. Anderson. The parade turns left onto Bertner, crossing Holcombe again and returning to the Houston Main Building picnic grounds.
