Dr. Richard Theriault, a member of the medical staff at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center since 1987, has been appointed vice president for medical affairs for the M. D. Anderson Outreach Corporation and the M. D. Anderson Physicians Network.

In his new role, Dr. Theriault is responsible for the provision of medical support for M. D. Anderson's business development activities. He will assist Dr. Martin Raber, senior vice president for strategic and business planning, and serve as a liaison for the cancer center's Clinical Council and Physicians Referral Service Management Team. Dr. Theriault also will direct and supervise clinical aspects of the M. D. Anderson Physicians Network, including assessment of clinical support service agreements, Cancer Manager™ programs, and other ventures and products as they are developed.

"Dr. Theriault will serve as a liaison with medical directors of third-party payers to assure success of the Physicians Network programs. In addition, he will work closely with our clinical and basic science faculty, providing information necessary for the development and implementation of new Outreach and Physicians Network business programs," said Leon Leach, executive vice president and chief financial officer at M. D. Anderson. "We are pleased that someone with Dr. Theriault's expertise has accepted this important position to support our new business development efforts."

Another key aspect of Dr. Theriault's role is to develop and chair M. D. Anderson's Clinical Advisory Board, which will serve in an advisory capacity to him regarding medical policies and procedures impacting new business development. In association with William Hyslop, vice president for business development for M. D. Anderson Outreach, Dr. Theriault will assist in assuring appropriate structure, organization and process for M. D. Anderson Outreach and Physicians Network business ventures, consistent with the mission and core values of M. D. Anderson. He also will work with the institution's managed care and financial programs to assure appropriate processes and procedures for financial success of the Physicians Network and its business ventures.

In conjunction with M. D. Anderson's Practice Outcomes Program, Dr. Theriault will assure timely and appropriate development, implementation and continuous improvement of clinical practice guidelines based on the quality care of divisions and departments.

A breast medical oncologist and professor of medicine, Dr. Theriault has served in a number of key administrative roles at M. D. Anderson, including medical director of the Nellie B. Connally Breast Center. Among other duties, he serves on the M. D. Anderson Surveillance Committee, the Practice Outcomes Program Steering Committee and the M. D. Anderson Physicians Network Board of Directors.
