At The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, volunteers continue to play an integral role. With the opening of the Mays Clinic in 2005 more than 300 additional volunteers were requested to staff this area.

Recruitment for positions in both the Main Building and Mays Clinic is ongoing. Many volunteers have increased their volunteer hours and have chosen to work positions in both buildings.

Mays Clinic houses the Gynecologic Oncology Center, Genitourinary Oncology Center and the Nellie B. Connally Breast Center. Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Oncology have also greatly expanded in Mays Clinic.

Volunteers recruited for Mays Clinic work in Ambulatory Surgery, Spiritual Care, Diagnostic Imaging, the Place …of wellness and in Radiation Oncology. Volunteers are also needed to serve as patient advocates, clinic aides, volunteer staff support, in the gift shop and Appearances.  Appearances is a new boutique which offers specialty products for patients being treated for cancer.  Volunteers also work in the Anderson Network Hospitality Center and other patient- and education-related sites.

Volunteer opportunities cover the spectrum — from direct patient contact through traditional services such as floor hosting to work requiring other special skills in such positions as pharmacy and laboratory work. A volunteer also is able to coordinate a volunteer work schedule into an existing lifestyle — daytime, evening and weekend placements are available. Volunteers work in more than 80 programs that support both patients and M. D. Anderson — positions with direct patient contact, limited patient contact or without patient contact.

Currently, more than 1,600 onsite volunteers and 1,400 nationwide Anderson Network patient and caregiver volunteers utilize compassion, skills and talent to battle cancer and to make a difference in the lives of patients at M. D. Anderson. Volunteers come from all walks of life and range in age from 14 to 92 with an average age of 46.
