Why should I give to MD Anderson?
In naming MD Anderson as one of the nation's first three Comprehensive Cancer Centers, the National Cancer Institute recognized the institution's vital role as a resource in conducting research, training physicians and scientists, and developing new programs that set the standards of cancer research and care. Because the faculty and staff focus solely on cancer, their cumulative expertise in treating and studying the disease is unparalleled. Only 9.3% of MD Anderson's budget comes from state appropriations. For every $1 of state support, MD Anderson must earn approximately $9 from patient care fees, grants and contracts, and charitable gifts. Your gift to MD Anderson reaches out through our many programs and services to touch lives worldwide.
I can only make a small gift at this time. Will it still make an impact?
Every gift makes a difference. The cumulative effect of several small gifts can be very significant, helping fund the start-up of a pilot project or enabling a scientist to gather the preliminary data needed to compete for federal research grants. In this way, the power of your gift is magnified many times over.
How do I make a memorial gift?
You can designate your gift in memory or in honor of a special person by selecting Memorial/Honor Donation when you access the Online Donation Form. You may request a supply of pre-addressed donation envelopes via e-mail to giving@mdanderson.org.Or call 713-792-3450 or 1-800-525-5841 for assistance.
Will I receive a thank-you note for my gift?
Yes. After making an online donation, you will receive an immediate confirmation and thank-you message. The Development Office will acknowledge donations sent by mail as soon as possible. Due to postage and handling costs, we are unable to acknowledge gifts of less than $10.
How do I create a fund?
MD Anderson Cancer Center values every gift regardless of amount or type. If you would like to create a named fund, the institution has spendable funds as well as an endowment program. You may view the suggested giving levels on the Types of Gifts page.
Is my gift tax deductible?
Yes. MD Anderson Cancer Center is a component of The University of Texas System, and gifts are deductible on federal tax returns subject to the limits allowed by the Internal Revenue Service (see IRS Code 170). A copy of the letter documenting tax-exempt status is available from the Development Office. If you make a gift associated with a product, event or service, the Development Office will provide you with the necessary documentation for tax purposes.
What if my company or foundation can give only to 501(c)3 organizations?
There are several options available. Please contact the Development Office at 713-792-3450 or 1-800-525-5841 for assistance.
Will MD Anderson apply any part of my gift to administrative costs?
Nothing is withheld for administrative costs from a contribution that is directed to a specific program area. For unrestricted gifts and special event contributions, a small amount is applied to fund-raising expenses. Overall, MD Anderson's cost per dollar raised has averaged only 9.6¢ in recent years, well below the industry guideline of 25¢ per dollar raised.
Can The University of Texas System redirect my gift for the use of another component institution?
No. The UT System ensures that its components are wise stewards of the resources entrusted to them. When you designate your gift for the use of MD Anderson Cancer Center, it is protected and cannot be redirected by The UT System.
How can I take advantage of my company's Matching Gift Program?
You can double or further multiply the impact of a gift if you are an employee, retiree or director of a corporation that matches gifts to qualified institutions. Read more on Matching Gifts and check the Matching Companies List. You may also contact the Development Office matching gift specialist at 713-792-3450 or 1-866-262-9028 to ask about your company's plan.
What are MD Anderson's donor protection policies?
In addition to the HIPAA Privacy policy, the Development Office adheres to the principles found in the Donor Bill of Rights developed by the Association of Healthcare Philanthropy.
Can I contribute a gift-in-kind or a gift of my time and talents?
Volunteer Services receives a wide variety of gifts-in-kind and can always use your help in areas ranging from delivering magazines to a patient's room to helping in the gift shop or a research laboratory. Please contact Volunteer Services at 713-792-JOIN for more information.
What opportunities are there for recognition?
We are pleased to recognize our partners in the fight against cancer. With your approval, recognition of your gift reflects our shared commitment to eliminate cancer as a major health threat and serves to inspire other donors.
Donors are recognized by membership in a variety of giving clubs and societies, depending on the type and size of gifts. Sponsorship of special events often offers opportunities for recognition in program materials and media coverage. Naming opportunities are available for endowments and for the construction or major renovation of facilities. In accordance with UT System policy, guidelines have been established for the recognition of significant gifts with naming opportunities and various types of publicity (such as publication of a donor honor roll, press releases to the media and placement of plaques or signs).
