How You Can Help

Ovarian Cancer Quilt Project

Quilt Project LogoThe Ovarian Cancer Awareness Quilt Project at M. D. Anderson was established to educate the public about the risk factors and symptoms of ovarian cancer through the artistry of quilting.

The women in M. D. Anderson's Ovarian Cancer Support Group donated the blocks to make the first quilt, which was displayed at the 2002 International Quilt Festival in Houston. Everyone touched by ovarian cancer, from survivors to family members and friends, was welcome to contribute a block. Since then, our project has grown tremendously. Over 100 teal ribbon quilt blocks, some of which have already been made into quilts, have been received. Catherine Ellison designed the Teal Ribbon Quilt Block, the hallmark of the project that raises awareness about the risk factors and symptoms of this disease.

Quilters from across the state created quilt blocks and entire quilts for the Ovarian Cancer Awareness Quilt Project's first online quilt auction in 2008. Sixty-eight quilts were auctioned to raise funds for the Blanton-Davis Ovarian Cancer Research Program, which aims to develop effective screening methods and, ultimately, a cure for ovarian cancer through innovative research.  On January 18, 2009, participating quilt shop owners and volunteer quilters gathered for a quilt sew-in, in preparation for this year's auction.
