How You Can Help
Ovarian Cancer Quilt Project
The Ovarian Cancer Awareness Quilt Project at M. D. Anderson was established to educate the public about the risk factors and symptoms of ovarian cancer through the artistry of quilting. Catherine Ellison designed the beautiful teal ribbon quilt block, the hallmark of the project that raises awareness about the risk factors and symptoms of this disease.
In 2002, the women in M. D. Anderson's Ovarian Cancer Support Group donated the blocks to make the first quilt, which was displayed at the International Quilt Festival in Houston. All who had been touched by ovarian cancer, including survivors, family members and friends, were invited to contribute a block. Since then, quilters from across the state and seven local quilt shops have created and donated hundreds of quilt blocks and entire quilts.
The second annual online quilt auction, scheduled for October 2009, will feature 107 quilts. Proceeds benefit the Blanton-Davis Ovarian Cancer Research Program, which aims to develop effective screening methods and, ultimately, a cure for ovarian cancer through innovative research.
In 2011, the focus of the Quilt Project will be expanded to include uterine cancers, and proceeds from the Online Quilt Auction will benefit both ovarian and uterine cancer research.
