 2008 Bike Relay
M. D. Anderson leukemia physician Charles Koller is participating in the 27th annual Houston Police Department Bicycle Relay Team for his sixth year to raise funds for leukemia and lymphoma research. This year, the intrepid bikers will begin at the Houston Police Academy and ride over 2,600 miles in eight days to Kelowna, British Columbia, in efforts to further the fight against blood cancers to “arrest these killers” once and for all.
This year’s ride will be especially significant for Dr. Koller, as he celebrates his own resilience from kidney cancer. In March, he underwent surgery to remove two tumors that were growing in his chest wall, spending the next three months in recovery. Dr. Koller’s triumphant return to the HPD relay team is fueled by his passion for finding a cure for leukemia and lymphoma.
Since 1982, the HPD Relay Team has pedaled over 58,000 miles and raised more than $3.5 million for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Dr. Koller continues to be a productive fundraiser. So far, he has received $40,000 for this year's relay, for a grand total of $200,000 since 2002. It's never too late to help! Each and every dollar is important to the goal of curing leukemia and lymphoma. Money raised by the ride will be given to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to provide critical grant funds for leukemia and lymphoma research, and direct patient aid for people stricken with leukemia, lymphoma and Hodgkin's Disease, and multiple myeloma.
