Target Audience

Goals

  • Create positive changes in physician competence in relation to communicating with patients;
  • Improve performance in communicating with patients by learning techniques described in this educational series;
  • Improve the health status of patients by communicating treatment information in an appropriate manner and allowing the patient to make an informed decision.

Educational Objectives

After participating in this enduring material, the participant should be able to:
  • Demonstrate appropriate communication skills to promote an increase in patient satisfaction with the overall care provided;
  • Discuss options for treatment plans with patients that will be more congruent with what the patient wants and increase patient compliance to treatment plan;
  • Interpret patient emotions and employ appropriate communication technique to acknowledge these emotions and decrease dissatisfaction and antipathy from patients;
  • Decrease litigation.

The videos in this section are approved for Continuing Medical Education (AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTm in medical ethics and/ or professional responsibility) through The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.

Note: The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education guidelines require that you read the CME Information before viewing the videos for CME credits.

Risk Management Education Credit (RME) Information

M. D. Anderson Cancer Center employees may request Risk Management Education credit (RME). All active, full-time medical staff and clinical trainees are required to obtain five credit hours of risk management education every year. Any module on the left can be taken for 1.00 hour of Risk Management credit each regardless of the length of time (2.00 for Basic Principles). The modules are recognized by the UT System as approved material to count toward required risk management hours for Professional Liability Insurance.

How to Apply for Risk Management Credits: You may receive 1.00 hour for each module to the left. After watching the module, please download a Risk Management Continuing Education application form (PDF), fill in, sign and fax to Catherine Kirkwood, M.P.H., at 713-794-4236.
