The Michael J. Ahearn 24th Annual Summer Workshop
for High School Science Educators
July 20 - July 31, 2009

Request for applications are now being accepted for the 2009 Summer Workshop for High School Science Educators at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. M. D. Anderson is one of the nation's leading cancer centers, and is dedicated to patient care, research, education and prevention.

Program goal: to provide High School science educators with a combined didactic and laboratory update on current research developments in the biological and physical sciences.

Curriculum
The Workshop for High School Science Educators occurs in concert with the final two weeks of The Carl B. & Florence E. King Foundation Program in Biomedical Sciences for outstanding high school graduates. This provides educators with an opportunity to interact with King Foundation program participants who are involved in a wide spectrum of ongoing research projects at the laboratory bench level. During the course of the two weeks, educators will become well-versed in the science and laboratory technology of these and other research projects..

Time will be allocated each week for attending:

  • Round-table discussions of laboratory research experiences
  • Presentations by the M. D. Anderson faculty and staff
  • Lectures on current topics in research and medicine
  • Final presentations of the King Foundation summer research projects

Qualifications
To qualify for the workshop program, applicants should currently be teaching one of the biological or physical sciences at the secondary level in a Texas school. Participants will be selected from both rural and urban schools and will represent varied years of teaching experience.

Remuneration
Participants will receive a Fellowship Award of $1,500 that is intended solely as a subsidy for the participant's living expenses for the duration of the program. It is not considered to be a salary.

Housing
Out of town participants may find low cost housing at a nearby university dorm . While the program office will assist participants in registering for this housing, the cost of housing will remain the responsibility of the participant.

Applications should include the following:

  • A completed application form. To request the application form complete the online request form.
  • Letter expressing the applicant's reason for wanting to participate.
  • Letter of recommendation from the applicant's Department Head or school principal.
