Introduction to Human Genetics: Curricular DVD and Teacher's Guide
A project of the 2005-2006 Michael J. Ahearn Summer Workshop for High School Science Educators
The Introduction to Human Genetics: Curricular DVD and Teacher's Guide provides high school science educators with a useful resource for the classroom presentation of basic molecular genetics, types of mutations, and the laboratory procedures that examine chromosomes and their genetic structure.
For teachers in Texas, this material is free, underwritten by the Dorothy E. King Summer Education Fund. For those outside Texas, the cost is $15.00 per module.

Module learning objectives
After completing the Introduction to Human Genetics curriculum, students will be able to:
- Describe the components of DNA.
- Describe the structure of DNA.
- Explain the processes of transcription and translation..
- Describe the different types of gene mutation.
- Differentiate between numerical and structural chromosome mutations.
- Relate chromosomal abnormalities to genetic disorders.
- Prepare a karyotype of human chromosomes.
- Describe the steps of the Fluorescent in situ Hybridization (FISH) procedure.
The DVD contains:
- Animated/live action sequences that illustrate:
- An overview of genetics
- Genetics and chromosomal mutations
- Laboratory procedures: karyotyping and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH)
- Links to web-based activities and resources
- A PowerPoint presentation, "Chromosomal Mutations," that includes notes
The 48-page Teacher's Guide expands on the material in the DVD with:
- Twenty-seven full color stills from the animation sequences
- A transcript of the narration from the animated/live action sequences
- A "Resources and Activities" section that includes reproducible handouts, answer keys for the activities, a glossary, and useful web-addresses for on-line activities and reference
- Content alignment with the Texas Academic Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) standards for high school science in Texas
