High School Summer Program
The Carl B. & Florence E. King Foundation 49th Annual High School Summer Program in Biomedical Sciences
June 8 - July 31, 2009
Request for nomination forms are now being acceptedfor the 2009 Summer Program in Biomedical Sciences at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas. A component of The University of Texas, M. D. Anderson is one of the nation's leading cancer research and treatment centers.
The program will introduce interested and qualified Texas young people to a research environment and provide firsthand experience in the varied career opportunities available in the biomedical sciences. A total of 20 students will be selected to participate in the eight-week program.
Curriculum
Students selected for the program are given a rare opportunity to conduct a research project in one of the biomedical disciplines under the guidance of a full-time member of the M. D. Anderson faculty. Emphasis is placed on the importance of the basic principles that form a foundation for scientific investigation.
During the program, students work in M. D. Anderson laboratories five days a week, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The majority of this time is spent doing actual hands-on work that provides the students with a clear knowledge of exactly what it means to be a biomedical researcher as well as an understanding of the discipline required.
The laboratory experience is supplemented by two seminars a week presented by faculty on a wide variety of research topics. Students also tour M. D. Anderson and the Texas Medical Center facilities to see ongoing activities in different areas.
At the end of the program, each student will prepare an oral and written report of his or her activities for presentation to fellow students and their research sponsors.
Qualifications
To qualify for the program, a student must have completed the senior year at a Texas high school prior to the start of the program. Other qualifications include a demonstration of scientific aptitude, a record of high academic achievement, excellent moral character, and interest in the program.
Nominations for the program are made by high school counselors and science faculty. Only one student may be nominated from each Texas high school.
Remuneration
Participants in the program receive a stipend of $1,000 for local students and $2,000 for out-of-town students for the eight-week period. The stipend is not a salary; it is meant solely to subsidize students so that they may participate in the program.
Housing
Accommodations for out-of-town students are available in nearby university dorms. Students will be asked to indicate on their applications if it will be necessary for them to find a place to stay in Houston.
Visit the sites below for more information about the Houston area. NOTE: Pages will open in a new browser window. M. D. Anderson does not endorse external sites.
To Apply
Nominations from high school counselors and science faculty for the 2009 Program must be returned by January 23, 2009. After these nominations have been returned, applications will be mailed to the students. Applications from the students must be returned by February 25, 2009. No applications received after the deadline will be considered.
Selection of program participants will be made in late March by members of The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Curriculum Subcommittee.
