Junior Year in Laboratory Sciences Programs
We now offer a junior year for four of our baccalaureate lab sciences programs:
This is a two semester academic transition to our degree granting programs to fulfill prerequisites and better prepare students for their chosen specialty. The following programs are included:
- Clinical Laboratory Sciences
- Cytotechnology
- Cytogenetic Technology
- Molecular Genetic Technology
Application deadline is February 1
Prerequisites
Prerequisites for the program: A minimum of 42 semester credit hours (SCH) that must include courses described in parts A & B below. Prerequisite courses must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, overall and in science classes.
Part A
The Texas Core Curriculum - 42 semester credit hours (SCH) that must include the following specific courses:

Communication
English Rhetoric/Composition: 6
Humanities and Visual and Performing Arts
Visual and Performing Arts: 3
Humanities: 3
Mathematics
College Algebra or higher: 3
Natural Sciences
Courses with prefix BIOL, CHEM, GEOL, PHYS or other Natural Sciences: 12
Social and Behavioral Sciences
U. S. History: 6
Political Science (U. S. and Texas constitutions): 6
Social and Behavioral Sciences: 3

Part B
Required and Recommended courses for entry into the program, that may be part of the Texas Core Curriculum listed in Part A above:
Courses for Clinical Laboratory Science, Cytogenetic Technology and Molecular Genetic Technology must include:
- Chemistry: minimum 16
- 8 General Chemistry
- 4 Organic Chemistry I
- 4 Organic Chemistry II
or - 3 or 4 Biochemistry
- Biological Sciences: minimum 8
- Biology I and II
- OR Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II
Courses for Cytotechnology must include:
- Chemistry: minimum 8
- General Chemistry I and II
- General Chemistry I and II
- Biological Sciences: minimum 8
- To include: 4 Human Anatomy and Physiology
