This poster session and elevator speech competition will showcase the research of the MD Anderson Summer Experience participants. We strongly encourage all MD Anderson faculty, staff and trainees to attend this special event, as well as research team, family and friends of the participants.  

Participants include those who are at MD Anderson for a summer experience including high school students, undergraduates, graduate research assistants, research interns, and health professional students.

This event will take place from 8am to 11am on Friday, August 7, 2015 in the Dan L. Duncan - Cancer Prevention Building (CPB) 8th Floor, Rooms 1 through 8. The street address is 1155 Pressler Avenue, Houston, TX 77030. Download the event flyer!

Order of Events

7:00 am - 7:45amPoster presenter check-in:
Participants must report to CPB 8 Rms 1 - 8, to receive a number assignment and must go to the designated board to setup their poster.
ALL posters must be in place by 7:45am.
8:00am - 10:00amPoster Session: All MD Anderson Summer Experience students will present posters on their summer research projects.

Elevator Speech Competition Details

  • 8 selected finalists will be selected to compete live, in person, on Friday, August 7th.  
  • These finalists will present 90-second elevator speeches describing their research as part of the MD Anderson Summer Experience.  The focus of the elevator speech is on communicating the significance of your work, rather than on reporting specific results.  Read more about elevator speeches.
  • Instructional workshops for creating elevator speeches will be offered (see Important Dates & Deadlines).
  • Any high school student, undergraduate , graduate, health professional or research intern at MD Anderson for a short-term summer experience, is eligible to register and participate. 
  • You do not need to submit a written abstract, and you do not need to have conclusive results to compete. 
  • Finalists will be selected from pre-submitted videos and will compete during the final summer event. View Sample ES Videos.
  • Cash prizes will be awarded for Elevator Speeches in the categories of Best Speech ($200) and People's Choice ($100).

How to Register for Elevator Speech Competition

Step 1: Commit to Compete! To register, send an email to Kava Lewis at, with your name, your commitment to compete and the email address at which you would like to receive the video link (see Step 3). Registration deadline: 5pm Monday, July 27th. 

Step 2:  Attend the free workshops & rehearsals! Learn how to create effective elevator speeches, practice, and get feedback. Download the helpful pdf guides: What is an elevator speech? and Elevator Speech: Elements, Styling and Tips and bring your questions to the workshop and rehearsals (see Important Dates & Deadlines below for times, dates & locations).

Step 3:  Create your video! Create a 90 second video on your tablet, laptop, camcorder, computer or smartphone of a "preliminary" elevator speech. View acceptable video formats. In this video, tell us about yourself and your summer research project. Be as creative and innovative as you wish!

Step 4:  Upload your video to our account! The email address used for registration will be entered into our account. Registered contestants will receive an e-mailed notification that they've been added to this account.  Video submission deadline: 5pm, Thursday, July 30th

Step 5: Find out if you're a finalist!  Eight finalists will be selected from the submitted videos and will be notified by 5pm, Monday, August 3rd. 

Step 6: Speak to Compete! The selected finalists will compete by presenting their elevator speeches, in person (not via video), on Friday, August 7th at 10:00am. 

Step 7: Claim your prize! The elevator speech winners will be announced at 11:00am on Friday, August 7th. Two cash prizes will be awarded for Best Speech ($200) and People's Choice ($100)!
