Comprehensive Cancer Screening Module
The comprehensive module consists of a combination of the Male Genitourinary module, Common Cancers module and the Breast/Gynecologic module. The three modules are offered consecutively in a one-week time span, and participants may choose to attend the modules in any combination.
Male Genitourinary Cancer Screening
This module is designed for staff nurses, advanced practice nurses and other clinical specialists. The goal of this module is to enable students to recognize cancer risk factors, perform a risk assessment, and perform or recommend appropriate primary and secondary prevention measures for male GU cancers. The participant will be presented with information concerning testicular, prostate, and urological cancer prevention and early detection and will have the opportunity to participate in a clinical practicum with real or simulated patients. Upon completion of the module, students will be able to demonstrate appropriate procedures and techniques for patient examination and documentation. Students will also have acquired the necessary knowledge and skills to apply and practice appropriate procedures and techniques for male GU cancer risk assessment and examination.
This is a one-and-a-half-day module consisting of classroom information that is enhanced with a clinical practicum and a half-day clinical experience. Clinical rotations are limited and therefore must be approved by the module coordinator or program manager.
Common Cancers Screening
The goal of this module is to enable staff nurses, advanced practice nurses and other clinical specialists to recognize cancer risk factors, perform risk assessment, and perform or recommend appropriate primary and secondary prevention measures for skin, colorectal and lung cancers. An overview of genetics, genetic basis of cancer, types of cancer genes, cancer genetic models, and features of inherited cancer will be included. Dietary risk will be identified including possible cancer inhibitors, initiators and promoters in the diet. Content is presented in an informal collaborative manner, and a variety of teaching methodologies are utilized.
The Common Cancers program is a half-day module classroom experience.
Breast/Gynecologic Cancer Screening
Nurses, mid-level clinicians and other clinical specialists will want to include the Breast/Gyn module in their educational background. The goal of this module is to enable participants to recognize cancer risk factors, perform risk assessment, and perform or recommend appropriate primary and secondary prevention measures for breast and gynecologic cancers. This module combines a streamlined version of the Breast Cancer Screening module with additional content concerning endometrial, ovarian and cervical cancers. Screening and prevention are discussed, and special attention is paid to assessment and diagnosis of breast and gynecologic cancers. Students have the opportunity to participate in a practicum performing breast and pelvic exams on live subjects and also observe one of several different clinics.
The Breast/Gyn module is a two-day program combining classroom lectures, a clinical practicum with case studies, and a half-day clinical experience. Clinical rotations are limited and therefore must be approved by the module coordinator or program manager.
