Physician Assistant Student Elective Rotation

Program Description

This four week elective rotation in clinical oncology is designed to acquaint the motivated, senior-level PA student with state-of-the-art multidisciplinary cancer care at a world-renowned comprehensive cancer center.

Students will be mentored by full-time clinical PAs who teach on a volunteer basis. Students will experience firsthand the care given to patients by oncology physician-physician assistant teams.

Students may choose from a variety of multidisciplinary rotations. Each rotation involves participation in lectures, grand rounds and multidisciplinary conferences. Selected students may identify three areas of interest and, upon availability, will be placed in one of these areas. Each student will be assigned a clinical PA to facilitate their learning experience.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the rotation, students:

  • Must submit letters of recommendation both from their current program director and an additional faculty member
  • Must have successfully completed at least one surgical and one medical clinical rotation
  • Must have completed an application and an accompanying essay
  • Must have an academic affiliation between the student’s current PA program and M. D. Anderson Cancer Center

Students whose programs do not have an academic affiliation with M. D. Anderson can have their programs request such an affiliation. This process may take six to 12 months to complete and must be completed prior to acceptance. Academic credit cannot be recorded without a completed academic affiliation agreement.

Selection Process

This competitive rotation is for senior-level PA students who have a keen interest in oncology. Students from PA programs that have an academic affiliation with M. D. Anderson must submit an application prior to beginning their second year. A selection committee of clinical PAs will review the applicants and select students for available positions.

Timetable

Applications are accepted throughout the year. Students are encouraged to apply during their junior year.
