Residency & Fellowship Training

An Environment of Integrity, Caring, Discovery

The mission of the M. D. Anderson Radiation Oncology Residency and Fellowship Program is to develop the careers of future U.S. and world leaders in academic radiation oncology through comprehensive education and training in clinical practice, laboratory sciences, teaching skills, verbal and written communication, and clinical, translational, and basic science research.

Choosing the right residency program or fellowship is a very important decision. About 23 residents and fellows are enrolled our training program annually, and each one gains enhanced clinical skills, a good grasp of evidence-based medicine and practice, and first-hand understanding of the contribution of basic research to clinical care.

Uncommon breadth, uncommon depth

Residents tell us that one of the best features of the radiation oncology training program at M. D. Anderson is the sheer breadth and depth of the types of cases. Another is the faculty. Residents train sequentially under mentors who are internationally recognized experts. Trainees learn how to treat a broad spectrum of cases within the confines of a specific type of cancer or a specific cancer site. Each rotation through 10 radiation oncology subspecialty clinics provides similar comprehensiveness. Faculty manipulate a broad range of treatment options to respond to the characteristics of each case, relying on traditional therapy or turning to new approaches, new technology, or clinical trials when appropriate. Because multidisciplinary care is practiced throughout the institution, trainees become quickly adept in understanding the perspectives of colleagues and the advantages and disadvantages of types and sequences of treatment.
