Transfusion Medicine & Blood Banking Fellowship
The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center has two one-year positions in an ACGME fully accredited fellowship training program in Transfusion Medicine/Blood Bank in Houston, Texas.
Program
UT M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is one of the largest cancer centers in the U. S. and is located in the Texas Medical Center five miles from downtown Houston, Texas.
The overall goals of this program are to train the fellow to be able to function as a medical director in Transfusion Medicine/Blood Bank, both in an academic or non-academic institution. This includes evaluating clinical cases and problems in immunohematology and serving as a consultant to attending physicians regarding the choice of the best blood/blood component therapy for their patients. The fellow will have extensive training in the collection of platelets, leukocytes and peripheral stem cells; he/she will be exposed to all requirements and demands on a modern transfusion service serving a large bone marrow and blood stem cell transplant service. The training includes a rotation within the Texas Medical Center at a large county hospital in order to provide the fellow sufficient exposure to general problems in immunohematology. The fellow will become proficient in the management of a functioning transfusion service, donor recruitment and collection, therapeutic phlebotomy and therapeutic apheresis and appropriate testing of blood and blood products. He/she will further participate in all aspects of quality improvement and accreditation issues (FDA, AABB, CAP).
The fellow will be given ample opportunity to prepare scientific publications, present lectures and seminars, participate in research and development of protocols and participate in the teaching of medical technology students, SBBs and residents of other institutions during rotation.
Requirements
The applicant should be board eligible in AP/CP or CP only.
Stipends
Stipends are commensurate with the applicant’s experience and previous training.
