Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship

The Section of Ophthalmology is accepting applications for a two-year fellowship in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery and orbital oncology. The overall goal of this fellowship program is to provide advanced training in surgical and medical treatment of patients with diseases of the orbit, eyelid, ocular adnexae and lacrimal drainage apparatus, and in reconstructive surgery of the ocular and periocular region, a discipline known as ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Fellows have primary exposure to oncologic oculoplastic surgery, with heavy emphasis on management of tumors of the eyelid, conjunctiva and orbit and reconstructive surgery in patients with cancer. In addition to full-time surgical rotations at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, a specific rotation in a non-oncologic practice of oculoplastic surgery is part of the curriculum in order to expose the fellows in non-oncologic aspects of oculoplastic surgery such as Graves’ ophthalmopathy, orbital and ocular adnexal trauma and periocular aesthetic surgery.

This fellowship program was recently approved by the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) to start in July of even years. Dr. Bita Esmaeli is the primary preceptor and the program director for the fellowship program and can be reached at: besmaeli@mdanderson.org
