Hematopathology Fellowship
Program
The Division of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center offers a two-year training program in hematopathology. The first year is a core year which provides broad-based knowledge in all areas of anatomic and laboratory hematology. The second year is available to selected individuals and is predominantly devoted to research with members of the program staff.
The fellow will become proficient in the clinical and laboratory evaluation of pathologic materials such as blood, bone marrow and lymph nodes. The fellow will obtain knowledge in the use of instruments and equipment required for diagnostic laboratory studies and in the management of a hematology laboratory. The fellow will gain knowledge and skills in light and fluorescent microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, bone marrow biopsy, immunohematology, immunophenotyping, tissue culture techniques, cytogenetics, histochemistry, cytochemistry, immunocytochemistry and molecular hematology. The experience in coagulation includes exposure to procedures used in the coagulation laboratory and clinical training in diagnosis, management and treatment of patients with coagulation disorders. Although the program is designed to provide experience and understanding in the special field of hematology, fellows will be encouraged to participate in other teaching programs of the Division of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
