Project: A Scatter Correction Method for a Commercially Available Positron Emission Mammography (PEM) Scanner

Positron emission mammography (PEM) is becoming an adjuvant modality to x-ray mammography with high sensitivity and specificity for diagnosing breast cancer. The functional images from PEM exhibit exceptional contrast between lesions and normal tissue, whereas overlying structures can make lesions difficult or impossible to see in x-ray mammography. PEM improves on the capabilities of whole body PET scanners for imaging breasts with improved sensitivity (less than 0.01 μCi/cc) and much higher resolution (1.5 mm FWHM). To further improve differential diagnoses by PEM, corrections for random coincidences, scatter, attenuation and dead-time would allow images to be quantitative. My thesis will focus on scatter correction for a commercially available PEM scanner.
