Project: Design and Implementation of an Anthropomorphic Pelvis Phantom for the Evaluation of Proton Therapy Treatment Procedures
The mission of the Radiological Physics Center (RPC) is to assure the NCI and the Cooperative Groups that institutions participating in clinical trials deliver prescribed radiation doses that are comparable and consistent. Currently, the RPC has a need for a heterogeneous phantom to evaluate the quality of proton therapy at institutions participating clinical trials. This phantom will audit the accuracy of the CT simulation, challenge the treatment planning system and provide dose measurements for treatment delivery. My research involves testing an anthropomorphic pelvis phantom for use in proton beams. The tissue equivalence of each material has been determined through stopping power measurements and clinically relevant treatment plans have been delivered to the phantom. Dose agreement between the treatment planning system and measured dose are being tabulated to assess the suitability of the phantom for auditing proton therapy treatments.
