General Information

Course Description

The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is pleased to provide an intensive hands-on, three-day course designed to review the current concepts and recent advances in interventional pulmonology as it pertains to the cancer patient, and to introduce new technologic advances that are poised to revolutionize the diagnosis, staging, and management of lung cancer.

Malignancies involving the lungs continue to provide a significant challenge to chest physicians. With the exponential increase in technology, several minimally-invasive diagnostic and therapeutic strategies are becoming feasible. As the largest cancer center in the world, M. D. Anderson is able to offer a depth and breadth of clinical experience and training that few can match. With a distinguished faculty made up of the world’s top experts, this course is designed to provide the participant with a state-of-the-art review of the principles and practice of interventional pulmonology in patients with thoracic malignancies.

In addition to attending interactive didactic sessions, participants will also receive extensive practical instruction in selected techniques utilizing in vivo animal models. Instruction group size is limited in order to maximize interaction and individual “hot zone” time. Additional instruction can be individualized for those wishing to emphasize particular techniques. Endobronchial ultrasound techniques will be particularly stressed and participants should be able to acquire the cognitive and technical skills to safely perform endobronchial ultrasound guided transbronchial needle biopsies upon course completion.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of this educational activity, participants should be able to

  • list the applications and limitations of currently available techniques for early diagnosis of lung cancer.
  • describe the indications and limitations of currently available techniques for mediastinal staging in the lung cancer patient.
  • explain current concepts in the curative and palliative management of lung cancer.
  • describe the applications and limitations of currently available techniques for the palliative management of malignant airway obstructions and pleural effusions.
  • describe the equipment, set up, and technical aspects of rigid bronchoscopy, airway stents, lasers, and APC as well as endobronchial ultrasound.
  • demonstrate the cognitive and technical skills to safely begin performing endobronchial ultrasound in a clinical setting.
  • identify potential avenues for new research-collaboration in interventional pulmonology.

Target Audience

This conference should be of interest to board-eligible/certified pulmonologists, thoracic surgeons, and trainees in pulmonary, critical care medicine, and thoracic surgery who have an interest in interventional pulmonology.

Evaluation

A course evaluation form will provide participants with the opportunity to comment on the value of the program content to their practice decisions, performance improvement activities, or possible impact on patient health status. Participants will also have the opportunity to comment on any perceived commercial bias in the presentations as well as to identify future educational topics.

Accreditation/Credit Designation

The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center designates this educational activity for a maximum of 19.50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

CME Certificates and Attendance Verfication Certificates

Certificates awarding AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ or certificates documenting attendance will be distributed to participants as they depart the conference. To obtain a CME certificate, physicians must submit a completed evaluation questionnaire and a CME Verification Form.

Upon request, a record of attendance (certificate) will be provided on-site to other health care professionals for requesting credits in accordance with state nursing boards, specialty societies, or other professional associations.
