General Information

Goal


The goal of this conference is to create a thorough understanding of the clinical implications of thyroid and parathyroid diseases and the impact of therapy upon patients.

Target Audience


This conference will be beneficial to head and neck surgeons, general endocrine surgeons, general surgeons, otolaryngologists, and endocrinologists.

Educational Objectives


After attending the conference, participants should be able to

  • describe the evaluation and management of primary (untreated) differentiated thyroid malignancies;
  • identify the clinical and pathologic criteria which characterize aggressive thyroid malignancies;
  • discuss the interdisciplinary approaches to recurrent thyroid cancer including surgical nuances, rules of radioactive iodine and external beam therapy, and systemic approaches;
  • explain the pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of patients with differentiated thyroid cancer;
  • explain the pathophysiology, diagnosis and therapy of patients with differentiated thyroid cancer;
  • discuss the indications for thyroid ultrasound and fine needle aspiration biopsy in the treatment of thyroid nodule disease;
  • describe the pathologic spectrum of thyroid and parathyroid neoplasms and their principal differentiating histologic features
  • relate the surgical management of invasive differentiated thyroid cancer and medullary carcinoma with respect to the extent of resection and management of the regional lymphatics
  • define the role of imaging and intraoperative rapid parathyroid hormone assay in the management of parathyroid adenomas and hyperplasia
  • identify the diagnostic and therapeutic approach to parathyroid reoperation for persistent hyperparathyroidism
  • differentiate the role of imaging, including FDG-PET scanning, I-131, and I-123, and the use of recombinant thyrotropin in the management of differentiated thyroid cancer.

Evaluation


A course evaluation form will provide participants with the opportunity to comment on the value of the program content to their practice decisions, performance improvement activities, or possible impact on patient health status. Participants will also have the opportunity to comment on any perceived commercial bias in the presentations as well as to identify future educational topics.

Accreditation/Credit Designation


The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center designates this educational activity for a maximum of 19.50 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

CME Certificates and Attendance Verification Certificates
Certificates awarding AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM or certificates documenting attendance will be distributed to participants when an individual departs the conference. To obtain a CME certificate, physicians must submit a completed evaluation questionnaire and a CME Verification Form.

Upon request, a record of attendance (certificate) will be provided on-site to other health care professionals for requesting credits in accordance with state nursing boards, specialty societies, or other professional associations.
