Faculty Educator of the Month: May 2014

Dr. Mimi I. Hu

Dr. Mimi I. Hu, Director of the Oncologic Endocrinology Fellowship Program, Rotation Program Director for the Endocrinology Fellowship Program, Associate Medical Director of the Endocrine Center, Co-Director of the Bone Healthcare Program, and Associate Professor in the Department of Endocrine Neoplasia and Hormonal Disorders, has been named the May 2014 Faculty Educator of the Month.

Dr. Mimi I. HuAs Director of the 1-year Oncologic Endocrinology Fellowship Program, Dr. Hu oversees the training of physicians in the evaluation and treatment of endocrine tumors. This training includes that in outpatient and inpatient treatment, rotations in nonendocrine specialties, preparation of research findings for presentation at meetings, and routine conferences. This program is the only one in the United States that trains physicians in the treatment of these very complex tumors. The first trainee in this novel fellowship program will start in July 2014.

Furthermore, since 2007, Dr. Hu has been active in supervising the rotations for endocrinology fellows from Baylor College of Medicine, The Methodist Hospital, and The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. She also has been a research mentor for three postdoctoral senior endocrine research fellows.

Dr. Hu’s educational contributions have extended to the lecture hall, as she has given numerous presentations in the MD Anderson Core Curriculum series. Specifically, she has been a Lecturer for the courses Thyroid Nodule Carcinomas, Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma, Calcium Emergencies, Overview of Endocrine Neoplasias, and Endocrine Paraneoplastic Syndromes.

Outside of MD Anderson, Dr. Hu was a Lecturer at Baylor College of Medicine to the internal medicine residents and medical students. She also served on endocrine fellows’ advisory committees. Additionally, Dr. Hu has given numerous presentations at meetings throughout the world.

Dr. Hu was named a Top Doctor by U.S. News & World Report in 2011 and 2012. She was also a finalist for the Outstanding Abstract Award and Presidential Poster Competition at the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society in 2011.

Dr. Hu received her M.D. degree from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston in 2000. She continued her training at Baylor College of Medicine, completing a clinical internship (2001) and clinical residency (2003) in internal medicine and a clinical fellowship in endocrinology (2007). While at Baylor, Dr. Hu was the chief medical resident in the Division of Internal Medicine. Dr. Hu also participated in the Clinical Research Curriculum in the Center for Clinical Research and Evidence-Based Medicine at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston.

In 2007, Dr. Hu came to MD Anderson as Rotation Program Director for the Endocrinology Fellowship Program and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Endocrine Neoplasia and Hormonal Disorders. She was promoted to Associate Professor in 2013. In addition, Dr. Hu was appointed Director of the Oncologic Endocrinology Fellowship Program and Director of the Bone Healthcare Program in 2011 and Associate Medical Director of the Endocrine Center in 2014. She has had an appointment as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Texas A&M University Health Science Center College of Medicine since 2010.

Since 2005, Dr. Hu has been the principal investigator, a co-principal investigator, or a collaborator for 24 funded research projects. Furthermore, she has been a reviewer for several journals. Over the course of her career, Dr. Hu has written 13 articles published in peer-reviewed journals, 13 invited articles, 12 book chapters, and several other publications.
