Lung Cancer Research Program

Funds for lung cancer research come to M. D. Anderson from the United States Congress. Lung cancer research is a Congressional Special Interest Medical Program, funds for which are directed by Congress to the U.S. Department of Defense budget, managed by the United States Army Medical Research and Materiel Command. These funds were distributed in the form of six grants to to Dr. Hong and M. D Anderson's Department of Thoracic/Head & Neck Medical Oncology.

The following clinical trials in this program are currently open to patient enrollment:

2003-0424: A Phase IIb Vanguard Study Characterizing the Occurrence of Recurrent or Second Primary Tumors in Patients with a Prior History of a Definitively Treated Stage I/II Head and Neck or Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Who Are Current or Former Smoker.

Erlotinib as Adjuvant Biologic Therapy in Patients with Early Stage Head and Neck and Lung Cancer. (Not yet open to enrollment)

2005-0929: Treatment of Malignant Pleural Effusion with ZD6474, a Novel Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Receptor (VEGFR) and Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor.

2005-0823: A Biomarker-Integrated Study in Chemorefractory Patients with Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.

2005-0824: A Phase II, Open Label Study of Erlotinib (Tarceva®) in Previously Treated Subjects with Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.

2005-0825: A Phase II Study of Erlotinib (Tarceva®) in Combination with Bexarotene (Targretin®) in Chemorefractory Patients with Advanced Non-small Cell Lung Cancer.

2005-0826: A Phase II, Open Label Study of ZD6474 in Previously Treated Subjects with Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.

2005-0827: A Phase II Study of Sorafenib (BAY 43-9006®) in Chemorefractory Patients with Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.
